Bird control licensing update

As we’re sure you’re aware a legal challenge by Wild Justice was brought against Natural England relating to the three general licences used to control 16 species of pest birds in the UK. This challenge highlighted that the licences were issued with a condition which requires users to be satisfied, but without Natural England being lawfully satisfied, that other satisfactory alternative solutions were considered before lethal control was applied, as is required by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. As a result of this, on 25th of April the three General Licences (GL04, 05 and 06) available to control pest birds in the UK were revoked.

We have today (3rd May 2019) produced a Technical Bulletin on the current still confused situation, with links to some further relevant reading. a further update will be posted as and when the situation becomes more clear.

The bulletin is available in the free downloads section of this website.
